iUS and DeepGEO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on circular-economy approaches to nuclear decommissioning that will also boost the acceptance of multinational pathways for permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

With many nuclear facilities entering decommissioning worldwide, significant volumes of activated steel and other waste streams are arising. Current disposal practices are often costly and difficult to scale. At the same time, the emergence of commercial, multinational repositories promises a flexible, secure, and financeable back-end solution for countries and companies that lack domestic disposal routes. These facilities provide a unique opportunity for the recycling of low-level radioactive materials.
Under the MoU, the parties will:
  • Assess reuse and recycling opportunities for low-level  radioactive materials
  • Jointly promote multinational deep geological repositories as a cornerstone of a sustainable global nuclear industry
