Community led
These teams strive to achieve the necessary public and political support for facilities, both within the host country and amongst its neighbors. In all cases, the initiative to join DeepGEO has come from local people and, not from the Board.
DeepGEO’s regional strategy currently includes North America (Labrador, Canada), Europe (Finland), and Africa (Ghana and Somaliland). Each location offers distinct advantages as a potential host for a multinational repository for spent nuclear fuel as well as its own unique challenges. By embracing innovative solutions and addressing genuine community and industrial needs DeepGEO is making progress with all its potential hosts. Pursuing multiple locations is in fact one of the key strengths of our approach.
Each potential host must have effective legal and government institutions as well as an accessible coastline to qualify. It must be part of, or committed to joining all the relevant international conventions and standards. In some potential hosts, there is a specific site and community that is the focus. In others, there are multiple options and there would need to be a selection process. Any site would need to undergo detailed technical assessments before construction could proceed. Three of DeepGEO’s potential hosts have already been subject to a preliminary technical evaluation.
DeepGEO was born of local communities and is inherently consent-based. We are honored to work with communities that are eager to improve their situation as well as that of future generations all while helping ensure the sustainability of nuclear energy. This is our core purpose. What we offer our hosts is a long-term committed business partnership and associated infrastructure investment opportunities that will deliver real growth and benefits for hundreds of years.
